News Room

Editor

It’s hard to believe I’ve been in the newspaper business almost my whole life. I’ve been the editor of the Star and Times, off and on, since 1999 – this after stops in Saskatoon, Dauphin, Prince Albert and Humboldt. Since moving here I got married, had a child, and became more community minded, playing senior hockey, recreation softball and joining the Kinsmen Club. We’re quite proud of the newspaper we’ve put together here in the Valley, but we always know there’s room for improvement. Feel free to contact me with any story ideas or suggestions.

Really, I started in the spring of 2006. It honestly feels like I just arrived for my first day of work.

I suppose it seems that way since there’s always something new for me to attend. That’s what I like about living in the Valley, all the people and all the new adventures.

So, I suppose I’ll see you around. Let me know if you have any stories to share at reporter@starandtimes.ca.

After all, if you don’t share your stories, what do we have to write about?

Feature Reporter

Jim Mullett

There is an irony in the fact that I am now working in the newspaper business. I spent most of my adult life as a counselor and supervisor with the Manitoba Departments of Justice and Family Services where I saw the media as the enemy who never “gets it right.”

Now after a few years of working off and on for newspapers in the Maritimes and Manitoba I realize that reporting and writing the news looks a lot easier from the outside-looking-in.

My wife and I have been in the Swan River area for two years now where I am semi-retired and writing for the Star and Times on a part-time-basis. I rarely cover hard news these days. My preference is for the longer feature which appears weekly on the Your Community page of the paper.

I work out of my home office so if you have any story ideas for me you can pass them on to the Editor.

  Student Reporter

Hello! My name is Jackie Buhler and I have been given the awesome opportunity to be the Star and Times student reporter.

I am seventeen and soon will be entering my twelfth and final year of school.

I am the oldest daughter of Ziff and Sonia Buhler, and the grand-daughter of Jake and Ruth Buhler, and Steve and Nellie Romak.
I have lived in Swan River all my life, and most of my family resides here as well.

Horses and Dance are the two greatest passions of mine. I have been a member of 4-H for eight years and have competed in local horse shows all over Manitoba including our Northwest Round Up and Exhibition in Swan River.

Dance is also a hobby of mine, I have taken part in classes from the Swan School of Dance.

Two other passions of mine are reading and the Arts. I am a very artistic person whether it be painting, dancing, or playing in a high school band.

I am very excited to have been given this chance, and I look forward to learning more about our valley and what is happening for community events.
